The Bug & Flowdan
Deep Cover Birmingham Launch
Amusement 13, Birmingham
Having put on countless nights in their hometown of Oxford that have featured Skepta, Zed Bias and Goldie as well as tonight’s headliners, the Deep Cover crew know all about putting a night on that features some bass heavy madness. Tonight sees them branching out with this inaugural night in the UKs second city and as we arrive at the fantastic setting that is Amusement 13 with its Void rig it is clear that is going to be a hell of a night.
Upon arrival, it is straight to the action where Werdna and FoxMind from the Circular Jaw collective are testing the Void system with an upbeat mix of bassline and grime with their version Swindle x D Double E collab Lemon Trees in particular getting the biggest reaction from the ever growing crowd, a crowd that considered themselves well and truly warmed up by the ever energetic set.
Amusement 13 is proven to be the perfect environment for the night with its vast main room managing to maintain an intimate feel on the dancefloor and is filled up by the power of the Void system creating an intense vibe throughout which was perfect for what was coming up next.
As The Bug reached the decks, the familiar strains of the full vocal version of the immortal Poison Dart erupted from the speakers and the crowd responded in kind, something that would continue throughout the set, with the dancing getting harder and more energetic by the minute. As that tune was wheeled up, the madness started again and the rig was really put through its paces by The Bugs punishing rhythms.
As the crowd got more and more hyped up by The Bugs beats, they reached fever pitch by the arrival of one of UKs finest MCs, standing calmly in front of the stage on a raised platform and as big Flowdan spat his initial bars, the crowd went completely crazy and didn’t let up for the next hour. The perfect addition to the dancefloor destruction caused by The Bug, Flowdan showed how well the two work together with his commanding vocals intertwining with the massive sonics exploding from the speakers.
All the massive tunes we wanted to gear were detonated from Function to Flowdans own Horror Show Style, they were delivered with an infectious energy that resonated throughout the entire room. Grime classics I Luv U, When I’m Ere, Wot Do You Call It and even a snippet of Oi were dropped and it was a dream to hear Flowdan spitting fire over those three times less instrumentals but the highlight of the set was when The Bug dropped the Iceman riddim and Flowdan spat his Jah War lyrics over the top, simply phenomenal! As the set drew to a close with the likes of a fiery version of Dirty, it is clear how well thses two artists work together with Flowdan declaring at one point, “absolutely dangerous, The Bug is a legend” and everyone danced themselves into a frenzy and gave them a fantastic reaction. It’s always a pleasure to witness The Bug and Flowdan in full wrecking mode and this was a performance to remember for a long time. Simply jaw dropping!
Following that set was always going to be a big task but Phrixus kept the energy flowing with a big set of bass heavy tracks before Deep Cover residents Zyklon Sound and VLVT took to the decks to deliver an energetic set. The night ended with a rolling set from Xantrax and a hardcore closing hour from Nuvaman who ended things off in style with a filthy breakbeat heavy set that rounded off a great night.
Big up to the Deep Cover crew for tonight and here’s hoping it won’t be long before they do another event up in Brum, I’m sure Amusement 13 will have recovered by then!
